PLAY PIPES

Modular Playground
Pratt Institute in partnership with The Vinyl Institute / 2019

Play Pipes is a modular playground made of secondhand, potable water PVC pipes. The re-purposing of these 42” diameter pipes is possible during underground pipe replacement, off-cut collection at construction sites, and during the material yard purges that occur at excavation companies.

The modules are constructed using three basic elements: the PVC pipes, 2 sizes of hexagonal cuts into the pipes, and 2 sizes of circular rubber gaskets
that fit into the cuts. The colorful holes created allow for vertical climbing, interior access, safety bumpers, light entrance, guardian sight lines, as well as visual cues for play.

The four modules have been designed to be compliant with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Public Playground Safety Handbook.
